HELP PLEASE !!
I have installed Firefox 0.9 and because I found that there wasn't a =
"Send to Desktop" function in the basic program, it was suggested to me =
to install deskCut
This I did by downloading deskCur 0.4.xpi and dragging it into the =
Firefox "Extensions" window, where it "appeared" to be installed, =
however I can't find deskCut in any of the Firefox dropdown menus #$%^&*
I saw that it should be in the "Context" menu, but I don't understand =
what/where is the "Context menu" in Firefox
Can someone please help me find the deskCut function so I can then =
changeover from IE
Cheers n Tears

It install fine, and I can get it to create "shortcuts" on the desktop,
but they don't actually work...
At first it was opening the stored web pages (from cache) now it just
opens a little box that says
Error - KIOExec
Unknown host google.com
(from a deskcut shortcut to google.com)
I'm using Debian, KDE and firefox 1.06, if that's any help

Did you adjust your preferences (even if you leave them at the defaults)?
Sometimes I've found that you need to do that first in order to get it
working properly.

Wow, your email worked!
it fixed it automagically. Seriously, it just
started working all by itself. I hate it when that happens, because I
have no clue what fixed it, and I'm likely to break it again *sigh*
well, at least I have working shortcuts for the moment.

I've seen at times KDE doesn't refresh the desktop at times... I've got
a Mandrivia install (I'm sending from it now...) where the shortcuts
don't show up all the time...
My sons machine is a Debian box that
always seems to work...
Go figure...
Thanks for the input in any case!

Since there seem to be actifity on the deskCut's mailing I'd like to re-ask my
Some time ago I installed THE Firefox's missing tool on my win2k system.
Thanks to Evan for having made this extension!
However, I got a little problem: the install process never asked me for the
language choice (though I see in the package that there are several options)
and it ended up in German. My computer and Firefox are in french.
Is there a way to select the language (I'd prefer English)?
Also, 'deskcut' is the first ever extension that I installed, but is it the
standard "Extensions procedure" which makes it (them) to install in current
user's home? Is there a simple way to make an extension system wide?
Thanks, Eric

I've installed vn 0.5.0.1 with FF 1.0.7 under Windows
XP and found that
deskcut did not create a shortcut when used on a link
- ie via the 'Create
deskcut to Link Target' context menu item.
This works as expected under the previous version,
I've not seen any report of this problem in the
mailing list so I decided to
report the issue.
Thanks for all the work on creating such a useful

I'm also experiencing the same problem as detailed in
Dyslexic Wobmat's recent post:
"I've installed vn 0.5.0.1 with FF 1.0.7 under Windows
XP and found that
deskcut did not create a shortcut when used on a link

Yeah... turns out there's a bug in the code there...
I'll be uploading
the fix shortly...

I'm using deskCut 0.5.0.1 on Windows XP. On the Directory tab in its
options, in File Path Options, when I select "Use Desktop" and click on
"Find", it identifies my desktop incorrectly. I have to select "Set
Directory" and browse to my desktop for it to be identified correctly.
Perhaps it is because my desktop is not in the "usual" place - I use
C:\User\Desktop.
It appears deskCut thinks the desktop must always be at
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop, which is not the case in Windows XP. In WinXP,
you can find out what your desktop is from the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders. The value called Desktop has the absolute path to the desktop.
Can you please fix this?

The issue is with the directory_service class in Mozilla itself... Here's the code to detect the users Desktop in windows:
function getWinDesktop () {
var retVal = '';
var dirService = Components.classes['@mozilla.org/file/directory_1'].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIProperties);
var winDesktop = dirService.get('DeskV', Components.interfaces.nsILocalFile);
if (winDesktop.exists()) {
winDesktop.
winDesktop = dirService.get('Favs', Components.interfaces.nsILocalFile);
if (winDesktop.exists()) {
retVal = winDesktop.
return retV
The values the directory_service knows about are defined in :
http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/xpcom/io/nsDirectoryServiceDefs.h
So for whatever reason, the directory_service isn't finding your desktop...
As for using the registry keys... there is an interface for it:
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/xpcom/ds/nsIWindowsRegKey.idl
.. but I have as much interest in playing with that as I do in eating my spleen...

You can do this manually without much difficulty, although I'm not
sure that you could say the same about doing it via a program!
Deskcut would have to parse the HTML to find out where the icon was
held, for a start.
To do it manually, view the web page source, look for the icon URL in
in the header and download this. You can then alter the URL shortcut
icon via the properties option. Very useful, and I do it all the

I've tried installing DeskCut twice.
The extension appears in the
Extensions box and I can change options.
But I cannot get the Create
DeskCut option to appear in the context menu after I right-click.
Isn't that how this extension is supposed to work?
TabMixPlus, if that makes a difference.
Thank you.

Umm, never mind.
Was right-clicking on tab and bookmark, but never
bothered to click on the main screen itself.
Sure enough, there was
the Create deskCut option.
Keeping the extension this time.

In the next major version of DeskCut, how about an option to force the resulting shortcuts to open in Firefox? In other words, it would create this shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://www.yahoo.com
instead of just:
http://www.yahoo.com
Like a lotta people I share a computer w/ someone who prefers IE, so IE
is still our default browser. This feature would allow me to create my
own shortcuts that'll always open in Firefox (my preferred browser).
just a thought...
ps: Deskcut is a fantastic extension - thanks for creating it!

This would not create a shortcut. It would create a proprietary file
disguised as a shortcut. And it wouldn't do what you wanted anyway.
What the shortcut does is sorted out locally. Why don't you have
separate logons for the different users (more secure) or, if that
isn't possible, create an extra option on the file menu, so opening
the URL with Firefox appears as an option when you right-click? This
is how I open web pages with Opera, so I know from experience that it
works quite neatly,

Thanks for the info & feedback about my suggestion.
>This would not create a shortcut. It would create a proprietary file

understand what you're saying about creating a "real" internet shortcut
that should be platform/browser-independent. I'm not sure I would call
it a "proprietary file" though - it's still a shortcut to a program
(Firefox), that simply passes it a URL address. In any case, I don't
see what harm it would do to add this as an *option* in DeskCut.
>And it wouldn't do what you wanted anyway.
Yes it would - I already have lots of shortcuts in that format that I've created manually - it works fine.

Using separate logins & SwitchUser would be a bit of a hassle,
since my wife & I are otherwise able to share a computer with no
problem - with the exception of our preferred browsers (I haven't been
able to convert her to Firefox -yet!).
As you suggested, I've already tried creating a SendTo Firefox item,
but it doesn't work - it opens the URL as a text file. If you or
someone else knows how to create a Context Menu item for opening URL
shortcuts in Firefox, please let me know . That would make this whole
DeskCut issue moot.

If you and your wife are sharing the same desktop then it seems to
me that the only way you'll be able to launch two different
browsers is via the right-click menu. There's no way that your
operating system will be able to tell whether she or you is using
a particular internet shortcut when it is clicked. I'm not sure how
amending the contents of the file will help you there.
Incidentally, I tried editing a test shortcut to do what you
suggested. When I clicked it, Firefox got completely confused. Just
for a laugh I tried launching Opera using the same shortcut.
According to you it should have launched Firefox, but, in fact, it
launched Opera (as I'd specified), which correctly rejected the URL
as invalid.
What operating system are you using (I'm using Windows 98) that
allows the contents of a shortcut to override how it's configured?
All the best,

Yes it would - I already have lots of shortcuts in that format

Using separate logins & SwitchUser would be a bit of a hassle,

able to convert her to Firefox -yet!).
As you suggested, I've already tried creating a SendTo Firefox
but it doesn't work - it opens the URL as a text file. If you
someone else knows how to create a Context Menu item for opening
shortcuts in Firefox, please let me know . That would make this
DeskCut issue moot.

You're right - now we're getting somewhere. Sorry I
didn't get back to you sooner, but I've been kinda swamped the last few
days. Yes, I understand the differenece between the two different kinds
of shortcuts, as you mentioned (lnk vs. url).
Let me just clarify what I was suggesting in my original post:
DeskCut could add the *option* to create a Firefox-specific shortcut
(i.e. a "file" shortcut to Firefox + a URL argument); instead of a
generic "internet" shortcut that will open in the O/S's default
browser. For me, the whole point of this would be to assure that any
shortcuts I create (using Deskcut) will always open in Firefox. Any shortcuts that my wife creates
(using IE) will open in IE in the usual manner. Thus, we could avoid
having to constantly switch the default browser setting back 'n forth
just so that shortcuts will open in our preferred browsers. Do you know
what I mean?
Since DeskCut already has most of the
functionality required to do this (get current URL, write a shortcut to
the Desktop, etc.), I assume it would be fairly trivial to add the
option I'm talking about.
btw, I tried your suggestion for
creating a new "Open In Firefox" file association, but it doesn't work
in XP: Firefox still tries to open the shortcut file itself
(%1), not the URL that it points to. I think I know why this works in
Win98 but not XP: it looks like XP has a totally different way of
handling URL shortcuts. It uses a .dll called the "Shell Doc Object and
Control Library", which I'm pretty sure doesn't exist in Win98. (screen
grab attached).
Of course, I can always just keep using BrowserTraySwitch - which allows me to change default browsers with two clicks.
Anyway, I've enjoyed our technical discussion. Thanks for your patience & efforts.
